Good evening Marines, Corpsmen, Chaplain, and veterans!
Remote work is something I have had a keen interest in for some time now.
I clearly recall a conversation I had with one if my operations supervisors way back in 2002. It had occurred to me that everything I was doing as a Fleet Managet pulled easily be done from home. I had all of the tools that I used daily at the office at home, but the angle I was pitching was how much overhead they could save if they allowed us to leave “the dungeon”.
“The Dungeon” was a keyed entry room where about 60 tightly packed cubicle were shoved into every available spare inch. In this florescent nightmare were housed all of the company’s CSR’s, Fleet Managers, Dispatchers, and Supervisors, who rotated in 3 shifts. This is where I was when 9-11 happened.
A cacophany of shouts, ringing phone lines, and the ever present1 mumble of us prisoners pleading with our drivers to tell us of their outdoor adventures. Almost daily there were outburts of anger where violence was a near thing, as logistics personnel were overcome with stress and frustration to the point where coming to blows over the last fresh poppy bagel seemed like poetic justice.
You would think getting rid of the expense to house all of us would he something the boss would jump at, right? Nope! In his words, “If you work from home, how will I know your working?” Full stop.
Times have changed, a lot. Interested in remote work from home or wherever? Check out the link below and explore! Dont forget to share this with your friends and veterans, in your groups, and around the web!
